CONCORDE ATTEMPTS ROUND-THE-WORLD RECORD
New York, USA Natsot Duration: 1.40"
An Air France Concorde took off from New York's Kennedy Airport
recently in an attempt to shatter the round-the-world speed record
for a civil airliner flying from west to east.
The supersonic Anglo-French-built plane scheduled stops in France,
Dubai, Bangkok, Guam, Honolulu and Acapulco.
Its first landing was scheduled about 3 hours and 20 minutes after
take-off in Toulouse, the centre of France's aerospace industry.
The globe-spanning flight will attempt to shave a few minutes off
the west-east record of 33 hours and 1 minute by travelling at
Mach 2 (about 1,500 mph or 2,400 kph) for just over 18 hours of
the flying time. The west-east record and the east-west record of
32 hours and 49 minutes, from Lisbon to Lisbon, are also held by
an Air France Concorde.
Timekeepers will count the hours, minutes and seconds from the
moment the aircraft's wheels leave the runway to the moment they
touch down.
