Preventing ankle injuries during basketball can be difficult due to their tendency to linger. Because of this, it makes the likelihood of re injury or a worsening an existing injury higher. Ankle injuries are very common when playing basketball and come without warning. Learning ways to prepare your ankles ahead of time will help you stay safe out on the court. The tips below and in the video from Dr. Michelle Wolcott will help to train and strengthen your ankles as well as learn ways recover when they do get injured.
1. Be aware of your environment.
2. Work at proprioceptive training exercises to stretch and strengthen the smaller stabilizing muscles around the ankle.
3. Use perturbation exercises to improve reaction times and increase balance while throwing and catching a ball.
4. Take time to assess any ankle injuries and take time to let them recover.
If you do injure your ankle while playing, minor rolls may be okay to walk off. However, if issues become chronic or pain worsens, it may require a specialist.
