What is an Italian Hot Dog?
I get asked this a lot, and there is only one answer. Go to Dickie Dees and order one. That's exactly what I did when Marybeth wanted her fix. We went to Newark and ordered ours at the counter. Rick, the owner, for as long as I can remember, hand cuts all of the potatoes, onions and peppers every day, then he plops them into the hot peanut oil until they are almost ready. A pizza roll is then cut in half and slit down the middle so one side can be coated with mustard and the other with ketchup. The deep-fried hotdogs are placed at the bottom with the peppers and onions smushed on top followed by the crisp, deep-fried potatoes, on top.
It is impossible to eat so you get a fork with it. You begin by eating the potatoes first, then, if you're like me, you pull off some of the bread, so you don't fill up on it, and go right for the bottom of the sandwich because that's where the best flavors are.
