Four worksites are becoming safer for nurses and more are in the works. Front line nurses developed the plan in collaboration with the government and health authorities to make site specific improvements, including: more staff and security officers, improved security systems including personal alarms and more cameras, violence de-escalation training, code white safety drills and consistency in rotations so nurses can provide safe patient care.
In August 2015, BCNU announced a collaboration with the Ministry of Health to make these safety improvements, paving the way for change at other sites. BCNU President Gayle Duteil says it’s a significant first step and the union will continue pressing for change, until every nurse has improved safety in their worksite.
