What are the biggest differences between Social Security retirement and Social Security disability? As I discuss in this video, the biggest difference involves what you have to prove.
To qualify for Social Security retirement, you only need to prove your age. To qualify for disability you need to prove that you meet SSA’s definition of disability - that you do not have the capacity to perform the duties of any competitive work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
If you are receiving disability benefits and you reach age 62, you will need to decide whether to continue with SSD or change to retirement. There are many factors that come into play, including your life expectancy and the difference in monthly payments between the two programs.
