Once you obtain Skyhold, you'll be able to choose a specialization after a few quests. As a Mage you can choose to become a Knight-Enchanter, Necromancer, or as shown in this video, a Rift Mage.

These specialization quests don't really tell you what to do exactly. This video will show you how to complete the "Way of the Rift Mage" quest to become a Rift Mage.

- Aqcuire writing on Rift Magic: This is found in Solas's room in Skyhold.
- Venatori Tomes: In the Exalter Planes are 3 locations where you can find a Venatori Rifter enemy that drops a Venatori Tome once killed. The third location you need to unlock first. Go to the location shown at 1:26 and unlock the Operation there. Go back to the Wartable in Skyhold and unlock the "Gain Access to Ghilan Hain's Grove". You can immediately fast travel to this location from the Wartable. It will place you at the Camp left of third location. Walk in the opposite direction of where you unlocked the operation and take the first left in the ruins.
- Ring Velvet: Many enemies in the Exalter Planes drop these. (Undead) Archers seem to drop these the most. ((If the quest log doesn't update the Velvet total, fast travel somewhere and it will count.).)
- Tome of Rifts: Once you've obtained all the items go to a Requisition table and craft the Tome.
