My accepted art school portfolio!
Some extra information about each school:
Ringling
- after talking to someone from admissions I learned they want
- figure drawings
- observational sketches
- a variety of mediums
- if you show a character design I was specifically told to make sheets with names like the ones I showed
- I was encouraged to include a still life
- I was told to not include animations even though it is an animation program
- different majors have different portfolio preferences. When I first got my portfolio reviewed by someone from Ringling they said it was closer to an illustration portfolio weather than computer animation, so I had to switch some stuff out.
- If you are applying to Ringling you can email your portfolio to someone from admissions and have it reviewed before you apply which is what I think was the difference between me getting in or not (I talked with Kelly Denski who was extremely helpful)
SCAD
- they don’t require a portfolio for admission, but it is important to submit because it is what gets you scholarships
- They don’t have specific requirements so I just submitted the same stuff that I did for Ringling
UNCSA
- The filmmaking program encompasses a lot of different concentrations, so they really want to see everything you’re interested in
- This is a filmmaking program so I made sure to include the film I made even if I’m not particularly proud of it because it shows I can make films
- They require an artistic statement, answers to five questions all a paragraph long, a resume, and for you to film yourself telling a story. So if you apply here make sure to put effort into these other components in addition to your portfolio.
Also! I went to the portfolio day in my area and both SCAD and Ringling were there which is where I met the admissions representative from Ringling that reviewed my portfolio. If you can make it to a portfolio day I highly recommend it because it was extremely helpful.
If you are applying to art school good luck! And know that it is not the end of the world if you don’t get into your dream school or any schools. I was almost not able to go to school at all, but I am extremely grateful I am because I can see just how much of a privilege it is to be able to pursue my passions in college!
