At least 25 people were killed on Tuesday during a religious gathering in northern India, following a deadly stampede, in an incident that sparked national alert in the country.

Officials said that more than 25 people were killed in a stampede during a Hindu religious event in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.

The victims, including a large number of women and some children, are still being identified.

How did the disaster happen?

Survivors described how the disaster occurred as they were trying to leave the event in the village of Mughalgarhi.

A spokesman for a senior police officer in the state of Uttar Pradesh told the BBC that it would "take hours before the final number is announced", but confirmed that at least 100 people had been killed.
An eyewitness, who requested to remain anonymous, told the BBC that everything was “going well,” until “suddenly I heard screaming and before I knew it, people were falling on each other.”

"A lot of people were crushed and I couldn't do much. I'm lucky to have survived."

“When the engagement ended, everyone started running away,” a woman named Shakuntala told the Press Trust of India.

“People fell into a gutter on the road. They started falling one on top of the other and crashed to death.”

Umesh Kumar Tripathi, chief medical officer of neighboring Etah district, told reporters that the "stampede" had killed a number of children.
