Labour appears to be in "a strange situation where it's too strong to die and too weak to win", according to The Telegraph's Deputy Political Editor Lucy Fisher.

Jill Mortimer, Hartlepool's first ever Conservative MP, said the Labour Party "took Hartlepool for granted" for 47 years in the wake of a historic win which represents a further hole in the Red Wall.
