Millions of chimneys' smoke poured out like water, pumping thick coal fumes into the air above. Unable to disperse upwards through the heavier cold air, hot, smoky fumes fell to the ground and did not visibly diminish for a solid week.
This recounts an episode from a time when deadly toxic smog shrouded London. What follows is the memoir of a time when daytime seemed like darkness and nighttime was a terrifying nightmare.
Smoke-filled fog shrouded the nation's capital from Friday, December 5, 1952, through Tuesday, December 9, 1952. While it heavily affected the population of London, causing a huge death toll and inconveniencing millions of people, the people it affected were also partly to blame for the smog.
The major cause of this gloomy event was pollution.
