When should you retake undergraduate coursework? Is graduate level coursework sufficient to show medical schools that you've improved in the hard sciences? And how does the MCAT factor in?
As always on the OldPreMeds Podcast, our question this week is taken from our nontraditional premed forum. (Ask your own questions at [ Ссылка ].)
Our question comes from a nontraditional premed just starting a master's program. This student has a 3.11 cumulative GPA and 2.9 science GPA from undergrad, and they got 5 Cs and a D in their med school prerequisites.
The student's main question is whether they should retake these undergraduate classes, or just take graduate classes in the hard sciences instead.
In my answer, I discuss:
• Do medical schools look more at undergrad GPA or master's GPA?
• Can you get financial aid for a postbac, or just for a master's?
• Why getting above a 3.0 undergraduate science GPA may open doors for this student.
• Can a strong MCAT score help you "overcome" a low GPA?
• Should you become a degree-seeking student to retake undergrad classes?
