Horrible Today: Icelandic Officials sends devastating warning | After Iceland volcano big eruption!
Sulfur dioxide levels in the atmosphere reached a historic high in Scotland following a volcanic eruption in Iceland. Edinburgh, no stranger to smog, experienced an unprecedented atmospheric event on May 31, unlike anything seen in the last 30 years. While marine pollution from the North Sea often blankets Scotland's capital, the smog observed on Friday felt very different.
UKCEH researchers are currently investigating whether this haze could be linked to a volcanic plume that transited the UK following the eruption in Iceland. A new fissure eruption occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, the fifth in a series of eruptions that began in December 2023 near the city of Grindavik. Initially thought to be of local concern due to its non-explosive nature, the impact of the eruption on air quality in the UK was thought to be minimal.
