Anti Pseudomonal penicillins
- all penicillins were not active against pseudomonas so the need arise for an improvement to be active against this bacteria so the anti pseudomonal penicillins were created
- examples are ticarcillin, azlocillin, mezlocillin and piperacillin and they were active against some gram positives, a lot of gram negatives and some anaerobes
- they were available in IV form to treat highly resistant gram negative infections associated with diabetic foot and diabetes in general
- this group of penicillins have the beta lactamase vulnerability so it also mixed with beta lactamase inhibitors and example would be tazocyn which is a mix of piperacillin and tazobactam
