With a name like kingfisher, it should be no surprise that these colourful birds are experts at plucking fish from lake, rivers and ponds. The surprise is that fish aren't the only things kingfishers eat!
Kingfishers are a large and diverse family of birds that can be found living across the planet in nearly all tropical and temperate regions. Seeing as they can be found in such a wide variety of habitats and ecosystems, kingfishers in different parts of the world may have learned to hunt for different types of prey-- fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, crustaceans, molluscs and even small mammals may all be on the menu!
But no matter the prey, most kingfishers hunt in a very similar way. Waiting patiently on a perch, these birds will plunge down to catch their prey in the blink of an eye, bringing the animal back to their perch to eat it. Kingfishers are so adept at this style of hunting that most prey items, like the fish in this video, are already dinner by the time they have any inkling a kingfisher may be watching them!
