Did you know you can across bike from the East Bay to the Peninsula? From the Fremont/Newark area you can actually cross the bridge by cycling to the Menlo Park side and it will take you right next to the Facebook campus. On the east bay side, you can go on a nice little hike at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Right now the park is closed off to cars so it's especially nice to go biking around there since there's less traffic! I see plenty of self-powered commuters crossing the bridge to work.
Since the weather was nice, my friend Chara and I went on a bike ride and we decided to document the pathway for those who haven't been before. Thanks Chara for helping me record some clips.
It can be a bit loud but it is still fun to do it if you have never tried it. I had to shout a little bit for my voice to be captured on my iPhone. It was a bit of an impromptu video so if I had a deadcat on my microphone it would have helped with all the wind noises.
The incline of the bridge is very gradual and should be do-able even for total beginners. To bike from the east bay parking lot to Palo Alto side parking is only 5 miles, so it's not difficult on a bike, especially if you have a road or hybrid bike. The round trip is about 10 miles from lot to the other side lot and back, so it's a pretty easy ride. I'm riding a Cannondale road bicycle in red and white color. Chara also is riding a Cannondale bike but in blue. It was just a nice way to get outside, breathe some fresh air, and get some aerobic exercise. After our bike trip, we went to grab Vietnamese sandwiches and it was a nice way to spend the day.
Have you biked across the San Francisco Bay water before? Are there any good trails to check out? Any favorite bicycling spots? Let me know!
More info about Don Edwards from fws.gov:
-- In the heart of California's high-tech industry lies a 30,000-acre oasis for millions of migratory birds and endangered species. The nation's first urban national wildlife refuge sits on the southern end of San Francisco Bay. The refuge, created in 1972, was largely the result of grassroots efforts by the local community to protect the San Francisco Bay ecosystem.
-- Major changes occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area following the California gold rush in 1849, creating a population boom explosive growth and development on sensitive lands surrounding the bay. The newly introduced salt industry, for example, converted tens of thousands of acres of salt marsh into commercial salt ponds. Conversion of wetlands to support development continued well into the 20th century, and today, nearly 85% of the bay's original marshes and shorelines have been altered.
-- Congressman Don Edwards, responding to local citizens who made up the South San Francisco Baylands Planning, Conservation and National Wildlife Refuge Committee, worked with Congress to create the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
-- The refuge was later renamed to Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in 1995 to honor Congressman Edwards' dedication to the refuge and its mission, which is to preserve and enhance wildlife habitat; protect migratory birds and threatened and endangered species; and provide opportunities for wildlife-oriented recreation and nature study for the surrounding communities.
