Testing a lightened stock clutch on Project 49. It performs similar or just a little better than the stock clutch with 1,500RPM springs. A set of clutch springs cost roughly $10. You can do this at no cost, assuming you have the tools. I drilled holes in the stock clutch shoes to take them down to 159.5 grams each. Stock shoes weighed closer to 175 grams. More weight removal would work like stiffer springs for later engagement, less would work closer to stock. Less shoe weight can also create more slip as the clutch engages, which can be helpful for a faster launch in some cases. More slip does create more heat though.
