In the crisp Arizona air, I embarked on a five-day odyssey astride my trusty electric bike. The year was 2021, and April’s sun hung low, casting elongated shadows across the Beeline Highway. Armed with determination and a penchant for adventure, I set forth from Peoria, a stone’s throw from the bustling heart of Phoenix.
0:00 Day 1: Peoria to Payson
At the stroke of midnight, my wheels spun, and the desert night enveloped me. The Beeline Highway stretched ahead—a ribbon of asphalt cutting through the arid landscape. Why start at night? Simple: to evade the relentless desert heat that would soon engulf the valley. As I pedaled, the city lights faded, replaced by the vast expanse of saguaro cacti and distant peaks. The moon, my silent companion, illuminated the way.
10:52 Day 2: Payson to Mormon Lake Area
The rim awaited—a formidable challenge. I knew the risks—the treacherous terrain, the lack of bike-friendly paths—but adventure beckoned. The ascent was grueling, my e-bike straining against gravity. Yet, fortune favored the bold. I conquered the rim, heart pounding, and descended toward Mormon Lake. There, beneath a star-studded sky, I pitched my one-man tent—a humble abode amid nature’s grandeur.
23:49 Day 3: Mormon Lake Area to Flagstaff
Dawn broke, and I dismantled my camp. The road beckoned, and I resumed my journey, gear stowed on my e-bike. But the wind—oh, the wind! It whipped across the open plains, desiccating my lips until they cracked. Real life, unfiltered and raw. Yet, I pedaled on, determined to reach Flagstaff—a haven of civilization with promises of hot showers and respite.
36:38 Day 4: Flagstaff to Prescott
Mingus Mountain loomed—a class 1 climb, even for my fully loaded e-bike. The ascent tested my limits, but the summit rewarded me with vistas that stole my breath. As I descended, I glimpsed Maynard James Keenan’s house in Jerome—a fleeting encounter with fame. His ducks quacked their indifference, and I wondered if the enigmatic musician watched from behind closed doors.
49:10 Day 5: Prescott to Peoria
Homeward bound, I pedaled from Prescott to Peoria—the valley of relentless sun. The asphalt hummed beneath my tires, memories etched into every mile. The saguaros stood sentinel, whispering tales of my journey. And as I rolled into Peoria, weary but fulfilled, I marveled at the desert’s resilience—the same resilience that fueled my electric bike across 400 miles of Arizona’s highways.
Eric Tennant, the sun-kissed wanderer, signing off.
