The suboccipital muscles are a group of four paired muscles that are positioned deep in the suboccipital region of the neck. They are found at the base of the occipital bone, hence their name. Most of these muscles are attached to the occipital bone at the inferior nuchal line.
The suboccipital muscle group includes the following muscles: rectus capitis posterior major, rectus capitis posterior minor, obliquus capitis superior, and obliquus capitis inferior.
All these muscles provide postural support for the head and collectively work together with other muscles to allow the extension, lateral flexion and rotation of the head.
