An armed gang took a total of £26.5 million, primarily in unused pound sterling banknotes, on December 20, 2004, after holding members of the families of two bank employees hostage to guarantee their participation.
This was one of the largest bank robberies in the United Kingdom's history.
The Northern Ireland Police Service (PSNI), the Independent Monitoring Commission, the British government, and the Taoiseach (prime minister of Ireland) all blamed the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA).
The IRA and Sinn Féin both denied this.
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland police forces made arrests and conducted home searches in 2005.
A total of £2.3 million was seized at Ted Cunningham's home in County Cork, and Phil Flynn was forced to quit as chairman of the Bank of Scotland (Ireland) since he was a director of one of Cunningham's firms.
Mr Cunningham was convicted of money laundering in 2009, had his sentence overturned in 2012, then was convicted again in 2014.
Chris Ward, one of the bank officials threatened by the group, was caught and charged with robbery in November 2005. The prosecution then failed to present any evidence at trial, and he was freed.
The heist harmed the Northern Ireland peace process. It resulted in a deterioration of ties between Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Sinn Féin MPs Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness.
Despite the fact that Cunningham and others were later convicted of crimes discovered during the inquiry, no one has ever been held personally accountable for the heist. The police investigation is still ongoing, and the matter is still unresolved.
