Frame rate and Resolution analysis of the new Blue Moon update for Fallout 76.
As part of the update, both Xbox Series X and PS5 have their respective frame rate caps removed and now both target 60 FPS.
The Xbox Series X did have a 60 FPS mode previously as a result of Xbox's FPS boost program. However, the game was forced to use settings from the Xbox One S version of the game including running the game with a resolution of 1080p. With this latest update, the Xbox version now reverts back to the Xbox One X version of the game which has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and now targets 60 FPS.
The frame rate on Xbox Series X does have some difficulties keeping up with the PS5 in like for like scenes, but this is mainly due to the fact that it is rendering at a much higher resolution. Some of the drops can be off-set by the use of VRR (variable refresh rate) if you have a display that supports it and as long as the frame rate remains in your display's VRR window. Should your display support it, this can be further improved by enabling 120Hz mode in the Xbox settings to further increase the VRR window.
The PS5 version also massively benefits from this latest update. Even though it does have a reduced resolution compared to the Xbox of 2560 x 1440, this enables the PS5 version to stay almost completely locked to 60 FPS. During my testing, there were only a couple of very short lived instances where the FPS deviated from target and only by a frame or two.
