On Thursday 4 July 1996, the Labour Party published 'new Labour, new life for Britain' - officially described as the pre-manifesto document before the 1997 general election. This was when the five pledges which would form the centre of Labour's election offer were unveiled. The date was chosen to tie in with a Labour Party Political Broadcast slot; here Tony Blair introduces the pledges, and invites viewers to join a conference call.
