Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, with over a million inhabitants in its #metropolitan area, and the #capital of #Macedonia. It is also known as the Consort, a reference to its historical status as the Consort or city of the #Byzantine #Empire next to #Constantinople. In fact, Thessaloniki is the second most important metropolis of the ancient #Kingdom of Macedonia, the Eastern Roman Empire, the #Ottoman Empire and Greece.
It is located in the #Thermaic Gulf, in the northwest corner of the #Aegean. It was founded in 315 BC. by #Kassander the #Macedonian, who named her after his wife Thessaloniki, daughter of #Philip II of Macedonia and sister of Alexander the Great. Thessaloniki exhibits Byzantine #architecture, including numerous early Christian and Byzantine #monuments, a World Heritage Site, as well as several #Roman, Ottoman and #Sephardic #Jewish structures.
Thessaloniki is a #popular #tourist #destination in Greece. In 2013, the National #Geographic #Magazine included Thessaloniki among the #top tourist destinations worldwide, while in 2014 the #Financial Times FDI (Foreign Direct Investments) magazine named Thessaloniki the best medium-sized European city of the future for human capital and # lifestyle.

The different #neighborhoods are small worlds in themselves, and when you climb the Byzantine walls and look over the whole of Thessaloniki at #sunset, you see what a big, organic city it is. The last of your experiences in Thessaloniki is not in Thessaloniki at all. As the main city of Greece in the north, it is ideally located for excursions in the countryside, from the #beaches of #Halkidiki (you can be in Kassandra, the first of the three "fingers" of the Halkidiki peninsula, in just over 1 hour) to the Royal Tombs of #Vergina (the burial place of Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great) one hour west. Other archaeological sites nearby include #Pella, #Philippous and Ancient #Dion and you can go wine tasting on a tour of Thessaloniki's #vineyards. In the south, you'll be hard pressed to resist Mount #Olympus or you could discover other little-known but extremely beautiful areas of Greece, such as the #Axios River Delta or #Thrace
