Verbs have four basic forms called principal parts. All tenses of a verb can be formed from these principal parts.
EXAMPLES:
Present = enjoy, laugh
Present Participle = (is) enjoying, (is) laughing
Past = enjoyed, laughed
Past Participle = (has) enjoyed, (has) laughed
Often, a principal part of a verb is used with a helping verb to form a verb phrase. In a verb phrase, the word that names the main action is called the main verb.
EXAMPLES:
People have practiced various crafts for centuries. (have = helping verb) (practiced = main verb)
My uncle is interested in cabinetry. (is = helping verb) (interested = main verb)
Sometimes, a verb phrase is interrupted by other words.
EXAMPLES:
Are you studying crafts? (are + studying = verb phrase)
I have always liked them. (have + liked = verb phrase)
