ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is embroiled in a public feud this week after he posted on Twitter Sunday that he was “viciously attacked” by the father of a deceased Muslim U.S. army captain.
Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the parents of deceased U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, appeared in support of Hillary Clinton at last week’s Democratic National Convention.
Captain Khan’s father Khizr Kahn took issue with Trump’s proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. He also claimed the GOP nominee had “sacrificed nothing and no one”.
“I think I've made a lot of sacrifices. I work very, very hard,” Trump said in an interview with ABC News, explaining he’d created “thousands of jobs”. He also commented on how Khan’s wife Ghazala did not speak at the convention, implying that she may not have been allowed to due to her religion, Reuters reported.
Captain Khan was reportedly killed in June 2004 inspecting soldiers near the entrance of a military base in northeastern Baghdad, the BBC reported.
While the inspection was taking place, a taxi loaded with explosives reportedly sped towards the entrance of the base. Khan told his men to get down, and with his hand raised in a halt gesture, the 27-year-old reportedly walked toward the taxi. It exploded, killing him, two civilians and wounding many others.
At the time, the mess hall near the entrance of the base was reportedly filled with more than 100 soldiers who were eating breakfast.
