In this video I cover the life story of Harriet Beecher Stowe, “the little lady who wrote the book that started this great war” (President Abraham Lincoln, upon meeting Harriet Beecher Stowe).

Harriet Beecher Stowe’s book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, helped turn the tide of public sentiment against slavery in the United States, and fortified President Lincoln in the days leading up to his decision to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Stowe’s story was an immediate bestseller.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin sold out at southern bookstores (despite being outlawed), injected the abolitionist movement with new energy, and deliberately drove a dagger into the most vulnerable point in America’s conscience: slavery’s assault on black families, especially children. Uncle Tom’s Cabin helped cause the Civil War, which led to the end of slavery in the United States.

And who was the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin? A mother of six who wrote by candlelight once her children were asleep.

Harriet Beecher Stowe stands out as a remarkable figure in American history for a myriad of reasons: Stowe was a female abolitionist who helped fugitive slaves in the Underground Railroad, she was the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and after the war she took up the cause of women’s suffrage.
