Thousands of people had their say on designs for a new Chinese National Theatre, taking advantage of a rare example of democracy. Forty-four desings and small-scale models went on display at Beijing's Museum of Chinese Revolutioniary History at the start of a week-long exhibition, during which the public was invited to vote for their favourite design. Beijing leaders will choose the final design by mid-August. The theatre, expected to cost more than three billion yuan (US$4 million) will be one of the most prestigious structures to be built in communist China.
