The mountaineering world is mourning the death of the legendary Italian climber Walter Bonatti.
He died of cancer in Rome aged 81.
Bonatti's daring made him a pioneer of little known and technically difficult routes particularly in the Alps, the Himalayas and Patagonia in the 1950s and 60s.
He was the first to make a solo ascent of the north face of the Matterhorn during winter in 1965.
He was awarded the French Legion d'Honneur for saving the lives of two fellow climbers after a disaster in the Alps....
