This History For Humans episode teaches the press wars between Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, the rise of yellow journalism, and how it helped cause the Spanish-American War and American imperialism. In a story-lecture format, it also unpacks the context of why many Americans at the close of the 19th century felt the itch of empire and how the worst of journalist practices, all with the aim of selling more papers, helped move America to war and a change in its national destiny. When the USS Maine exploded the yellow press was quick to chum the waters of war, but the story concludes with lessons learned from this and the importance for citizens to find trustworthy media and think critically.
For teachers and homeschool parents, I have resources that go with this lesson that include interactive notesheets, a quick quiz, and an extension lesson with students analyzing visual primary sources to analyze the arguments for and against women's suffrage, after summing up the arguments they write fictional-historic tweets to capture how supporters would have felt the day after the 19th Amendment was ratified.
