The conservation of historic vernacular wooden churches in the south east region of Poland. An online talk by Dr Tomasz Tomaszek on 25th October 2023.
Dr Tomasz Tomaszek is an Associate Professor at the Department of Monuments Conservation in the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Architecture, at Rzeszow University of Technology in Poland. He obtained masters degrees in the conservation and restoration of fine art objects and in philosophy in Krakow, Poland, and completed his PhD at Krakow University of Technology, Poland. Tomasz has also completed the ICCROM wood conservation courses in Kizhi, Russia and in Norway, and has research and scholar fellowships at academic institutions around the world including Japan, China, USA, Norway and Poland.
Dr Tomaszek’s talk looks at the issues surrounding the conservation of historic vernacular wooden churches in the south east region of Poland, many of which were abandoned at the end of the 2nd World War, and are now in a ruined state. The future of so many wooden churches in this historically volatile region of Poland is at risk, and Tomasz presents a holistic approach to their conservation. Informed by the concepts of authenticity and significance of historic wooden buildings, the approach has been developed to address both the repair of the wooden structure and the conservation of the polychrome decoration of the interiors. Tomasz’s research uses examples of churches once belonging to the Ukrainian minorities in this border region of Poland, including the 17th century log-timber Greek-Catholic church in Miękisz Stary.
