In this video, Dr Subhaprakash Sanyal, Director - haematology, Haemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant (Fortis Hospital, Mulund) talks about Multiple Myeloma and how a Kenyan patient Mary Machero recovered after seeking multiple myeloma treatment at this hospital. It is a type of bone marrow cancer that involves plasma cells. The patient was diagnosed almost a year ago in Kenya and was treated with chemotherapy there. When the disease was well under control she came to India for bone marrow transplantation at Fortis Hospital, Mulund.

The treatment started on a very positive note. The patient was first assessed regarding her general condition, then stem cell collection was done, followed by the completion of a bone marrow transplant. The multiple myeloma treatment was completed in the 14-day period. The patient tolerated the procedure very well and suffered from very few complications thanks to the entire medical team including the nursing team particularly Aruna sister & Catherin sister who had put in a great effort. The junior doctors were also involved in making this process successful.

The patient shall be staying outside for 2-3 weeks. After the assessment, she shall be discharged and depart our country to Kenya to complete the rest of the medical procedures. Multiple Myeloma happens to be the cancer of plasma cells. here , myeloma cells multiply and take cancerous form. If not treated on time, it can damage the patient’s kidney, RBC count, immune system as well as bones also. It is hard to detect as its symptoms are non-specific such as fever, pain in bones or loss of appetite.
