just pure chaos dude like damn
The Exo Mechs are superbly well made. Each of their designs are fantastic and the fight is actually extremely cool
The only thing is that actually playing the fight is not dissimilar to getting your eyeballs carved out of your head with a rusty scalpel
For real though, the fight demands an absurdly large arena (fight is literally undoable without it) and a lot of memorization instead of immediate skill, which is pretty different from the other boss of this tier (SCal). This fight took me 132 attempts to beat (6 more than SCal and the new record for attempts on a Terraria bossfight for me), with several attempts getting to the final Exo mech before I realize I dont actually know what to do and get one tapped by T Hanos beam L (real story)
While the fight has some consistency once you've memorized attack patterns, it doesn't really help that with a relatively smaller arena like mine, many of the phases are still absolutely chaos with relatively little chance of not getting hit.
Key Points
1. Figure out the order you want to fight them in. I'll list the one I used (and the easiest in my opinion for Melee) below.
1. Begin with Exo Twins on their own until they reach 70%
2. Ares and Thanatos together until Ares reaches 70%
3. All Exo Mechs together until Exo Twins reach 40%
4. Exo Twins Phase 2 on their own until they die
5. Thanatos on its own until it reaches 70%
6. Ares and Thanatos together again until Ares reaches 40%
7. Ares Phase 2 on its own until it dies
8. Thanatos Phase 2 and increased aggression until it dies
This order allows you to eliminate the Exo Twins first (the hardest of the mechs when they're solo), and allows you to stall Thanatos so that you can skip the most difficult part of Ares Phase 2 through a Rage + Adrenaline nuke.
2. Attack Patterns
You HAVE to know the attack patterns. I'll list the most important ones below.
Exo Twins 1
Start the fight by dropping to the right. Artemis always spawns to your left, and the Shotgun Laser is what you need to look out for, which it shoots every ~7 single lasers (you don't need to keep count always, just generally be able to tell when it's been shooting for a while). Be mindful of Apollo's rockets after the first shotgun goes off.
Ares/Thanatos 1
Start by moving to the right again. Ares will open with its tesla cannon, which follows you to the right. Then, watch for TWO of his plasma bolts to come out, then go LEFT and OVER the tesla wall to avoid his laser cannon that moves to the left.
If this phase is not finished by this point, start by moving to the right and up as far as you can to dodge the tesla cannon. Then, move downwards to avoid the laser cannon, which will move down this time.
Triple Exo Mechs
this part is just chaos there's really not much you can do without a massive arena lolol
Generally, I try to move towards Artemis (the only part of the fight where you should do this), and then move accordingly to Ares' Laser and Tesla cannons (so, be mindful of which direction Ares' last laser cannon went before you start this phase)
Exo Twins Phase 2
dont get hit by ohio beam
always move AWAY from artemis during this phase, the twins will switch places on occasion after their special attacks (and you should always switch direction along with them), and unlike phase 1 you actually have to dodge Shotgun Laser by going in the same direction as the lasers now
Thanatos solo
dont get hit
Ares/Thanatos 2
this phase doesnt exist because you rage + adrenaline nuke Ares down to 40% in less than 10 seconds
Ares 2
also doesnt exist because Ares dies before it uses the special attack
if this phase does exist, you literally just have to learn how to dodge the beams once; Ares will die soon after usually
Thanatos 2
run for your life until it starts charging T Hanos beam. You need to move as CLOSE to the head as you can during its wind up, which is what allows you to dodge the actual beam while it coils around you. Teleport out of the coil once the beam is gone and then repeat.
As you can see, a significant chunk of the difficulty comes from the Exo Twins, with the hardest part likely being their second phase. Once they're done, you're usually in the clear as long as you know what to do.
3. Arena
if you don't want to suffer, just get a world-sized arena download for this fight and use that. or you can improved drill mount a sixth of your world like I did and still have it not be big enough for a clean fight
4. Not really a tip, but if you're struggling against this fight, I'd recommend all classes beat SCal first. While SCal requires a slightly different skillset than this boss, I would still say she's probably slightly easier than the Exo Mechs for most people. Beating her nets you at least one new weapon, and most importantly, the enchantment and exhume system. Shattered Community and an enchanted Violence is what makes the Ares nuke possible.
Yes, I will be doing Boss Rush and Eidolon Wyrm.
