In this video I'll demonstrate my process for performing and recording hand hardness. The hand hardness or resistance observation is used as an attempt to identify strong over weak snowpack layering. However it does not easily identify weak interfaces or existing persistent weak layers (P.W.L.). It requires experience to maintain consistency. This observation can be easily completed many times in hand dug pits through out a tour. Hand hardness SHOULD NOT BE used as a "ride" or "don't ride" decision making tool. This observation should be used in conjunction with recent snowpack, weather, and avalanche observations to create a mosaic of data points to confirm your local avalanche bulletin.
Your personal experience, emotions, and group dynamic may play a bigger influence than any technical data point you gather.
Seek qualified in person instruction, spend time practicing skills in low consequence terrain, and take your time gaining experience in the unforgiving mountain environment.
