The death toll in Sri Lanka has surpassed 300 following coordinated bombings targeting churches and hotels on Easter Sunday. The island has been put under a state of emergency after at least 321 people were killed and hundreds more injured in the terrorist attacks.
According to UNICEF, the death toll includes at least 45 children including Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, a 5th grader from Washington D.C. who had been studying in his mother’s home country Sri Lanka.
Alex Arrow, Kieran’s father: '8 PM my time, 8 AM his time, I called him, and he texted me back that he couldn’t talk. It turns out that he was in the elevator going to breakfast. And right after that is when it all happened.'
Under a state of emergency, law enforcement can arrest and detain people without charges or a court order. 40 Sri Lankan nationals have been taken into custody for questioning.
The government has imposed an indefinite ban on access to social media, including YouTube and Facebook to stop the spread of ‘fake news.’
While ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, as it has done after previous terror attacks around the world, the group offered no evidence. Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister has said officials are currently investigating the claim.
''We, certainly the security apparatus, are of the view there are foreign links and some of the evidence points to that so if the IS (Islamic State) claimed it, we’ll be following up on this claim. There was suspicion of links with ISIS.''
Officials have said that National Thowheeth Jama’ath, a local terrorist group, is suspected to be involved and that they received assistance from an international ‘network.’ Other officials in Sri Lanka have said it’s ‘possible’ that the bombings are in retaliation of the March 2019 mosque shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Sri Lanka is a predominantly Buddhist country with large Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities. While violence against Muslims has risen since 2013, the country’s Muslims and Christians do not have a history of violence.
