Dr Mathilde His, a postdoctoral scientist in the Section of Nutrition and Metabolism at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), explains how IARC researchers use data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study to identify dietary and lifestyle risk factors related to the development of breast cancer, in a new video to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Dr His also provides estimates of the extent to which some of these risk factors contribute to the global burden of breast cancer.
This video is part of a short series of interviews with IARC researchers that cover topics related to breast cancer development, risk factors, and the evidence base for public health recommendations that aim to reduce the burden of this disease.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer type and the leading cause of cancer death in women globally. In 2018, there were an estimated 2.1 million new cases of breast cancer and 627 000 deaths from breast cancer worldwide.
