Radio Rookies is a New York Public Radio initiative that provides teenagers with the tools and training to create radio stories about themselves, their communities and their world.
Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.
Radio Rookies and Common Sense Media came together to hold a one week Digital Literacy & Citizenship Workshop at the Vanderbilt YMCA. Fifteen McBurney YMCA's Teen Camp YScholars teens participated in this workshop. In one week the teens begin to explore "what is digital literacy & citizenship?" They learned how to use digital media responsibly and were given the chance to produce a video/audio/multimedia piece about what they've learned. Their findings will be used to inform their peers as well as to help give educators the tools to teach young people across the nation about digital literacy and citizenship.
