Each year, approximately 5.2 million people die from noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), mainly cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases in the Region of the Americas. Of these, 35% occur in people 30- 70 years of age. These diseases have a major impact on life, well-being and the ability to work for people who suffer from them, while posing a major challenge to countries' health systems and economies.
The countries of the Region of the Americas have committed to reduce premature mortality by NCD by one third by 2030. To achieve this, there are cost-effective measures that have proven effective in reducing tobacco use and harmful Alcohol, promote healthy eating and physical activity and integrate interventions for the management of noncommunicable diseases in the health system at primary care level.
