This is a Modular race track that my buddy Dan built, with an Arduino (ESP8266 Feather Huzzah actually) based timer which I built. Together this made for an amazing project..the track is lightweight, can be broken down for storage, assembled by the kids, and doesn't have power or network cables running around. The electronics fit in the box at the finish line, and the race results are viewed as a website which the arduino hosts. The single battery pack provides hours of fun. This project is now up on instructables, so you can get the source, find out how it was built, and build it, hack it, or mod it yourself!
The track itself was built such that it could work with just about any toy cars...Hot Wheels, Pinewood derby, and espescially lego cars. The starting gate is controlled
by a simple wrist turn, and off the cars go towards break beam sensors hidden at
the finish line. As each car crosses (hopefully!) they break the beams and the
times are recorded. Any device which can connect to wifi and that has a browser (phones, tablets, even a smart TV!) can connect and then display the times.
