Palpation of the shoulder region includes palpation for any inflammatory signs (such as warmth, swelling, or tenderness), bony structures and muscle structures. Pay attention to any pain, which can be a sign of trauma or osteoarthritis. Watch out for other signs of trauma including swelling or displacement. Make sure to palpate all of the structures of the shoulder region including the sternoclavicular joint, clavicle, acromioclavicular (AC) joint, coracoid process of the scapula, the greater tubercle of the humerus, and the various scapular prominences (the scapular spine, its medial border, its inferior angle, and its lateral border).
