The proconsul of Cisalpine Gaul was looking to expand the borders of Rome. In the region there were a lot of raids on the outskirts, stopping reliable communication. Citizens of Rome did not want to move into these lands as they were far too dangerous. The proconsul planned to take Gaul one city at a time. After constantly losing battle after battle, the Gauls' were fed up. Tribes set their differences aside to make a single army to stop the Roman invaders. They appointed a man with proven battlefield experience and he knew the ins and outs of the Roman military. After the elders convened they picked Vercingetorix to lead them. The battle ground was chosen at Alesia.
