Professor Joseph Wiemels explains how environmental factors can cause changes in the way that people's DNA acts to control development and many other aspects of human biology. Such changes are called "epigenetic" because they involve addition and deletion of markers on the structures that support DNA in cells. In this presentation, Professor Wiemels highlights methodsto measure early epigenetic changes that may contribute to disease. These are one form of epigenetic changes, known as methylation, measured in small samples of blood collected on cards.
