Tigerclaw always hated kittypets and having Smudge/Spotpaw as his other apprentice was not something he liked. Spotpaw knew that Tigerclaw wasn't someone who was very kind, but having his own mentor look at him with hatred or disappointment even if he did the best he could do was something that hurt him. The apprentice always tried to seek Tigerclaw's approval, obtaining very few positive results.
