The sigma molecular orbitals of benzene are derived using the method of the Correspondence Theorem on basis functions (the "Kim Method"). The formation of molecular orbitals depends upon atomic orbitals having the proper symmetry relationships (which we can get from group theory), and having sufficiently close energies (which we can't get from group theory).
