Today we go for a ride on the Sand Creek Regional Greenway trail as well as slay some single sand track in the adjoining deep, sandy creekside trails where fat bikes really shine.
The Triple Creek Trailhead parking lot is located just west of Tower Rd. on the south side of Colfax Ave. It’s a brand new parking area with fresh grass planted at the time of this writing. There is a restroom facility and places to tie up horses. I used to have to park creatively in the area…
The 14-mile long Sand Creek Regional Greenway trail goes all the way to the Platte River and ends at the Platte River trail. It’s a beautiful location with a feeling of being in nature even though you’re still in Denver. There are various critters that call the area home including Bald Eagles, Deer, Coyote and lots of Prairie Dogs along the way. Most of the trail is fully exposed to the sun so make sure to apply lots of sunscreen. There a various trails that connect to the main Sand Creek Regional Greenway trail such as the creekside trails which meander along near the creek. also, you can access the High Line Canal trail again at the starting of Sand Creek. There are also trails designated for horseback/hiking only. No bikes on these trails. If you see people riding horses you should slow down and stop, letting the horses pass you by without incident. Horses can get spooked by people on bikes, so it's best to just stop and give em' a howdy and a big smile.
*DO NOT make a Right onto the Platte River trail as it will eventually lead you to a waste treatment area which is dumping treated water into the river via large pipe. The smell is the worst thing you will ever smell in your life! Seriously, I barley made it through the area without getting sick all over. So go left if you want more riding and head towards downtown Denver. You may want to air your tires up here since it’s all paved on the Platte River trail.
You can also start from the end of the High Line Canal Trail from the parking area. Unfortunately, the last few miles of the HLCT are unridable so this is it. Basically, this is where the end is if you ever wanted to do the whole 66 mile trail from Waterton Canyon. Or you can do it backwards from the Triple Creek Trailhead parking lot. Neat.
It's Going to be FUN.
