Flight invention and the history of the first aircraft started thanks to Sir George Cayley, known as the 'Father of Aviation' who developed one of the first flying machines. In fact his Cayley Gilder was the world's first aircraft capable of heavier than air flight - a successful human glider.
Sir George Cayley lived in Brompton by Sawdon in North Yorkshire and it was in the fields here where the world's first aircraft glider successfully recorded the first heavier than air flight, ever!
Cayley also discovered the four aerodynamic forces of flight: weight, lift, drag, thrust; and cambered wings, basis for the design of the modern aeroplane.
