If you ever find yourself disoriented or lost in North Australia, find yourself some Magnetic Termite mounds.
These incredible structures are the work of the Grass eating Compass Termite (Amitermes meridionalis)
And are built in this fashion to optimize the cooling of the nest. In the early morning and late afternoon the sun warms the Eastern and Western sides. During the hottest times of the day when the sun is overhead it only heats the knife edge of the North/South axis.
You can literally set your compass or get your bearings by the Magnetic Termite mounds and get yourself out of trouble.
