We are building a "2 story" one bedroom custom cabin at one of our properties named 'D40'. This is where we have our annual deer camp and also get together to hunt other various game and fish with family and friends on the 'main farm'. After many years experiencing tent failures due to high winds and bad weather the next step was to build our own cabin. THIS IS NOT A HOW TO VIDEO! We are taking this whole build one step at a time learning how to do things and MAKING MISTAKES as we go. We are totally open to suggestions and critiquing of our work. We have yet to finalize any plans for the inside and hope to get it "closed in" by deer season and the outside completed before the weather gets bad.
After letting the concrete piers cure for 28 days AJ, Aaron, Abby and Rylan all come up over memorial day weekend to set the beams and to work on installing our floor joists. Its not long into the day and I realize I've made a crucial error. I did not measure the spacing of the piers correctly and they were too far apart for my dimensions, which is only going to lead to many material cost issues down the line. I measured inside to inside instead of "on center". After adjusting the overall size of the cabin we're able to use the beams and get them set on the piers, again being slightly off center. However it's not long and we run into trouble once again. We struggle for hours trying to get our first 4 sides (rim joists) square on top of the beams. I call upon my dad Bill for help. After some number crunching he begins pushing on corners in different directions until he gets it square. That showcases another mistake. I never squared the 3 beams below after readjusting, but they were really close and thus why we struggled trying to square the rim off of them. The cabin will set just slightly crooked on the beams.
AJ and I return the following day and work all day getting the floor joists all nailed in flush and level. The following weekend (June 4th) AJ, Aaron and I come back to install the Advantech subfloor on top of our floor joists. We attach hurricane ties and place shims to get everything "perfect" before we put down the subfloor. It was just a matter of glueing and sledging the Advantech tongue and groove system together and it goes down nice with relatively no issues.
