While the New York City Subway's R40 Subway Cars have been gone for many years now, some parts of the cars have survived! Seen here is one of the side rollsigns removed from the decommissioned cars.
Before digital signs took over, many subway cars around the world used printed signs to display train information, like route and destinations. These signs would be on a roll, allowing them to display multiple routes and/or terminals so the cars can change routes as needed, hence the name rollsigns.
The R40, like many New York City subway cars at the time, used three (3) piece rollsigns on the sides of the car. One for the route, one for the south terminal, and one for the north terminal. Shown here is scrolling through the south terminal portion rollsign.
