Contemporary art's just not my thing. I remember being out years ago at a celeb hotspot in Soho (NYC) with an up-and-coming modern artist. We were in a big group at Cipriani, which featured his works on the walls of the intimate space. After having a few too many cocktails, I got into a passionate discussion about why I think a lot of contemporary art is, well, bullshit. He couldn't have been more engaging and willing to defend his craft (I still cringe at the fact I was so impertinent). His reasoning was really more like education than lecturing, and it prompted me to open my eyes a bit more about his world.
Today, Peter Tunney is a successful visual artist with bases both in NYC and Miami. And I am much more thoughtful about art in general. But when it comes down to it, I still find the stories behind the Peggy Guggenheim Museum more interesting than the art itself (sorry, Peter!). There are many things I find intriguing about The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice's Dorsoduro neighborhood. The fact that a modern art gallery is one of the most popular museums in a city known for it's ancient buildings didn't escape me. But as I dove deeper in to the story behind Peggy and her innovative collection, the secrets that began to unfold about the history of the museum and those who spent time there. I covered the basics in this video, but I'll be sure to get more in depth in future videos once I get back to the island and can do a little more investigating.
Until then, enjoy the brief history and culture lesson.
