Many health care providers who work at hospitals in New York City say they are now living in a post COVID-19 surge, but pre-vaccine era.
At Metropolitan Hospital in East Harlem the number of patients is way down from pre-pandemic days, as many people are treated via telemedicine for issues that used to bring them to the emergency room.
The hospital is busy creating ways for staff to process the trauma of witnessing so much death, while also fearful of a second wave of infections in the fall and winter.
The hospital has a respite center for doctors and nurses to go before and after shifts, it includes a yoga room, emotional support and refreshments.
Metropolitan Hospital is part of the NYC Health + Hospitals health care network. Dr. Eric Wei helped create the health network's 'Helping Healers Heal' program to treat health care providers on the front lines of new coronavirus pandemic.
