Your gall bladder need not be removed just because stones are there. Stones if you just randomly select a 100 people, about a 20% of the people may have stones and none of these patients s may have any symptoms. Whenever the patient doesn’t have any symptoms there is no need to remove the gall bladder. Gall bladder surgery is indicated or the treatment is indicated or the medical or the surgical treatment is indicated only when the gall bladder causes symptoms quite serious to affect his daily life. One of the commonest symptoms which tells us that the gall bladder stones are going into complications are acute pain in the upper abdomen. When such things happen, the patients requires treatment. Or else, most of the patients who have got gall stones do not require any sort of treatment throughout their life. Regarding these patients who require treatment there are two methods one is the medical line of management and one is the surgery. The medical line of management is to dissolve the stone. This is called as medical dissolution of stones and this involves selecting the patients and the section criteria’s are very clear. The stones have to be purely fat stones. The gall bladder harbouring the stones have to be functioning and there should be no complications associated with the gall stones and the gall bladder functioning and the cystic duct should be patient. It is only when these things are met with, then oral dissolution can be done. Having said this we will be dissolving only thee stones. We will not be treating the diseased gall bladder in the medical dissolution of stones. So the best treatment would be to remove the gall bladder with the stones for the simple reason that the gall bladder is diseased. It is damaged due to recurrent attacks and it has become chronically infected and inflamed. This is going to give rise to lot of problems and the stone per se may slip to the common bile duct and may cause many grave surgical complications. Therefore it is wiser to remove this gall bladder.
